Hi folks,
I have been limping along using webster.com for all of my dicitonary needs and I know there has to be something better out there. What do YOU use?
Thanks,

Try dictionary.com as an alt. dictionary. I don't know if it is any better or worse--it's just what I use. I'll check out webster.com as an alt.
Cheers,

My first step is to go to http://www.google.com/ and enter word definition where word is the word or phrase that you're looking up. Most of the time that brings up several dictionary entries.
There are many dictionaries and other reference works at http://www.bartleby.com/

These are all great suggestions.
However, what happens when your not web enabled?
Last year, the best Christmas gift a co-worker has ever given to me was a CD of the Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. The Christmas gift idea also courtesy of Stratogrip – Thanks again!
The CD includes alternate searches, search by meaning, bookmaking, last lookup, and of course index. The software included recorded pronunciation sound bites. That alone is worth the price of admission. However, the true value goes back to my original question. When your not web enabled, having the dictionary in your hard drive is a lifesaver. _________________ Rick Sanchez

I can barely imagine living like that. It would be like working in Ebeneezer Scrooge's office, writing with a quill.
I understand that some work environments do not have Internet access. If I had to work in one, I would probably do research from home.

Jim,
It's not my work, it's when I am at home. I live out in the country and broadband has not made it out there, yet.
Connecting on a dial-up is sometimes just not worth it. Before, I got the CD, I rather pullup my hardback, then pull out my hair waiting for dial-up.
Thanks for the image, though _________________ Rick Sanchez

I was able to obtain the Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary CD from Barnes & Noble online store:
http://www.bn.com
Current data for this is: ISBN: 0375720235. Price $17.95.
What's cool about the Random House Unabridged Dictionary CD is that you can load it ALL on your hard drive (consumes 25 MB). Then it's wicked-fast to look up any word. I use it a LOT.
The next reference I'm looking forward to, released on CD, is this:
Chicago Manual of Style - 15th edition
CD-ROM Mac/Win $55.00 0-226-10404-4 Fall 2004
http://www.press.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/hfs.cgi/00/15542.ctl
Actually, per amazon.com, this isn't supposed to be available until November 1, 2005. _________________ - John Reynolds, STC Houston |
